The Role of an Architect Beyond the Drawings
I was having a bit of a chat with my wife the other day. Being in the early stages of kicking off my business; she has become one of my biggest advocates and as a result she was talking to her friends at work about my plans. One of her co-workers asked the question “what does an architect actually do?”
When she told me this (combined with the rest of their conversation), it became abundantly clear that our role beyond the drawings seems to be largely unknown to the general public.
Architects, besides creating intricate drawings, engage in a multifaceted process that involves problem-solving, collaboration with various stakeholders, and overseeing the construction of the designed structures. While builders excel at construction, architects bring a unique set of skills to the table. Here's why having an architect on your team is a game-changer:
Design First
We’ll start with the obvious. Architects are trained to translate your vision into a functional and beautiful space. They consider factors like light flow, traffic patterns, and efficient use of space to create a design that reflects your needs and lifestyle. We spend years at university training in critical thinking, followed by rigorous on job experience to get up to scratch prior to registering as architects. This is all to ensure your home is entirely considered from the function through to the aesthetic.
When compared to Builders who typically work with pre-existing plans or offer a limited range of modifications, the benefits of the early involvement of an architect can be immediately apparent.
Advocate and Mediator
Building projects can get complex, with engineers, contractors, and various regulations involved. An architect acts as your advocate, ensuring everyone involved understands your vision and works collaboratively. We mediate discussions, translate technical jargon, and ensure your voice is heard throughout the process. We’re your representative and everyone knows it.
This can be hugely important. Without that voice in the room; there can often be situations in which decisions are being made behind the scenes by others that may not necessarily be in your best interest. This is also why finding the right architect for your job is also important (more on this in a later post)
Permit Navigator
Building permits and planning approvals can be a labyrinth. Architects are well-versed in zoning regulations and building codes. We know how to work with them (and at times; against them) to get the best result for your build with full council approval under your belt. We’re able to handle the permit application process, saving you time, frustration, and potential delays.
Cost Management, Not Just Cost Cutting
While builders focus on construction costs, architects take a holistic approach. We consider long-term value, optimizing materials and design for energy efficiency and sustainability, which can translate to significant savings over time.
Sometimes a desired finish or material may be slightly outside of your budget range. A good architect will instead work on compromise, as opposed to complete removal. This means finding cost efficient alternatives that align with your vision, not sacrificing your dream for the sake of shaving a few bucks.
Project Superintendent
Last but certainly not least, when engaged for a full scope; an architect will also act as your project superintendent.
We will oversee the construction process, conduct regular site visits, identify any discrepancies between the design and execution, and finally ensure the build is sound and of a high quality. This approach ensures your dream stays on track and avoids costly surprises down the line.
This allows for an impartial voice to be involved on site and ensure everything is conducted in a fair and reasonable manner. In essence, architects become your on-site representative during the building stage. We advocate for your vision, ensure quality construction, and proactively address any issues that might arise, ultimately delivering the dream space you envisioned.
To wrap this up; builders and other professionals can certainly offer some design services, but an architect goes beyond aesthetics. They champion your vision, navigate complexities, and ensure a smooth, stress-free journey from concept to completion. In the end, their expertise translates into a space that not only functions beautifully but reflects your unique personality and fulfills your dreams while taking as much of the stress off your shoulders as we can.
